I don't know if anyone has mentioned this: Over half of Barcelona's starting XI is 21 or under. Six players; Four 21 year olds and two 17 year olds.

A 17 year old centre back and a 21 year old left back. All 3 in midfield are 21. But, Arteta is scared shitless to play a very ready Nwaneri.

Squad assembly is as important a characteristic as in- game management, tactics, formation, substitutions etc. However, it's regarded here as less important. Arteta does not seem to learn. Three seasons ago he quite rightly discarded misfits and those whom he did not like, which is his prerogative. For example, players sold or loaned out included Mustafi, Sokratis, Torreira, Guendouzi, AIM, Kolasinac etc. However, squad numbers were not replaced and by the end of that season, a "4th place trophy" we should have easily have secured disappeared as injuries, poor form took over and we lacked numbers, let alone quality in the run-in. This was ridiculous and negligent. This pre-season, Arteta had the opportunity to further improve the squad and build on two seasons' 2nd place. What does he do, get rid of Smith-Rowe, Nelson, Nketiah, which we can all understand to some extent. However, he then buys yet another defender and defensive midfielder in Calafiori and Merino and loans in the has-been, Sterling. Where is the balance? We have no-one to understudy Saka or Odegaard, refuses to play Nwaneri and picks another has-been, Jesus, to play and as a captain last night! This follows the highly creative midfield of Rice, Partey and Merino against the mighty Bournemouth. Arteta has not given the club the best chance of success this season and his risk averse and safety first tactics will be found out against better clubs going forward.

I wonder how badly our finances were affected by Arteta decision to sign Ramsdale as our No 1 and then change his mind four months later to sign another No 1 that we couldn't afford, had to do loan deal for a season before purchase, and club lost £££ on Ramsdale sale this summer.

How do you know how much we have to spend or not spend? Spending £80m+ on the defence and defensive midfield, plus another youth keeper was hardly priority was it? In four years, Arteta has not managed to find anybody, internally or elsewhere who can adequaely fill in or help to rotate Saka and Odegaard.

Chelsea (1.06) 0-2 (1.18) City

City (1.55) 2-1 (1.05) Brentford

Newcastle (1.34) 1-1 (1.27) City

City (1.37) 3-2 (2.76) Fulham

Wolves (0.76) 1-2 (1.37) City

We are flaming Arsenal while City have been getting away with it.

I saw a table on twitter that shows the xG for and xG against only while teams were 11v11. The Arsenal some love to flame have the highest xG for and the lowest xG against. Shocking for some, I know.

We'll go back to our best from the games against City, Leicester and PSG. We just need to get a couple of bodies back - mainly Saka, and be a bit smarter to avoid getting red carded. If we were 11v11 we would have been 1st on the table and not by a point either.

City drew in the last minute against us and a few days ago scored a winner in the last second. If the goals in the last second didn't go in, we'd be talking about a crises there but since they did all is fine? I'm more interested in the other 94 minutes of the games and especially when it's 11v11 cause surely this avalanche of red cards coming our way will stop soon. Surely...

For the record, I am not of the same opinion as Pedro saying we win the league after pep leaves. This year is a must for me. It is essential we win it. Otherwise we will be in danger of losing our best players.

But I am not mad at the fact that we aren't as smooth as we could be about our football. There is context to it. We aren't playing at our best but we have deserved to win most of our games, and we have. Performances will improve.

That is what sort of patience I am talking about. Yeah the football isn't as good as it could be but there are factors attached to it. And I am of the opinion that Arteta will get it right. Our fixtures are fairly spread out to our advantage. We have 2 hard games at times but we have already passed the hardest fixture runs of our season with Villa, Spurs and City away. After our next batch of fixtures involving Newcastle and Inter and Chelsea, we have a smoother ride than our challengers.

And the league will be close contested. And I haven't completely written off our signings. I think Merino will come good and we have already seen what Calafiori offers us. Sterling has been poor. But I am not completely writing him off for now either.

The mood will be different if we win on Sunday against Liverpool. And I believe we will

Do you think Guardiola rushes Merino in to the starting 11, if the shoe were on the other foot?

My take is that he wouldn't. He does that to many of his signings, even Gvardiol. He makes them wait until they get the pulse of the team.

Arteta is going to have to choose two of Partey, Rice and Merino. He can't play any two away from their best position to jam in the third.

Also, injuries are part of football

So why is it that we cleared the deck of attacking players who were backup but did not replace them in the window?

It was criminal negligence to enter the last hours of the window without a striking option, that we were willing to take the chance stands as an indictment.

The squad is too tilted towards defense, that's why we have only two players creative players in the entire squad.

Fans really need to be patient as long as we aren't miles behind Liverpool and City. It was the same last season. It took us a bit of time to find the fluidity to play fantastic football. We have been ravaged by injuries, and are trying a lot of different combinations so far this season. The midfield has had no continuity, the defense has had multiple injuries and even in forward lines we have missed some players at times. I think we will beat Liverpool. And I think we will be in touching distance by January. And when we find our groove, we will be unstoppable and we will go on a mad run. I hope it will be enough this time with City being without Rodri.

Are the fans allowed to speak out whilst being "patient"?

Clubs that have had two close consecutive second place finish to a premier league juggernaut like Guardiola's man city should never have the tepid summer we had.

We strategically botched last summer transfer in spending outlay and the targets we chose to seek.

You read some of the comments and you feel we will get the same type of support for the manager for the same length of time

I agree we've been quite unlucky with injuries this season but we were never going to be as lucky as we were last season with them which was why the summer was the best time to properly shore up the squad, doesn't feel like we did hence the not so great performances and mixed results.

Our only hope feels like it'll be to if City aren't really motivated inn another title tilt and Liverpool run out of gas as it feels they will with that performance against Chelsea

I am not talking about patience in regards to winning silverware. I am talking about patience about fluidity and wanting better football.

There are no excuses this season. We must win the league. But interms of playing fluid football, people need to calm down. We are still getting results apart from the shocker at the weekend vs Bournemouth.

And I am not on this hype train for other teams. We have had one of the most difficult runs along with injuries. We have lost 1 game. There needs to be balance with criticism.

I'll leave you in the puddle of your own making, if you think my stances have been pro-club establishment.

I think Arteta has been a good manager but hasn't been restrained by the club properly. They've let him stack the shelves with the same type of produce, without enough variety. The balance between manager and DoF is far too tilted to Arteta.

Our transfer policy has been to give Artea what he wants, not what he needs. That's why we have 6 left FBs in the squad and no back up for Odegaard.

Contrast it with a club that has a great Director of football, like Villa have in Monchi. You can see the balance they have in the squad.

There's a difference and distinction

The manager is supposed to get what he needs, not what he wants

Emery is not the one that signed Rodgers from Boro for 15 million or Jhon Doran from the MLS for 18 million ...IT WAS MONCHI. The manager deals with today, the tech director is thinking two steps ahead.

There's no way any director of football would have constructed a side like ours, it's the manager's wants that they gratified.

Even the best managers need to be saved from themselves, Arsenal have tilted the power too much in the manager's favor.

I'm sure you're aware Villa have spent over €100m in each of their last 6 seasons.

€776m or ~£650m, according to transfermarkt, over 6 seasons.

We are not talking about some low ass team. They've been spending a lot.

I respect Emery a lot but his strategy against big teams has always been to defend and hit on the counter. That philosophy isn't sustainable when you are the big team - look over at Manure and Ten Hag.

Villa's injury list is and I quote:

"Kortney Hause Knee injury"

Fullstop.

Red cards - one. The other day versus Fulham given to a squad player in the 93rd minute.

Arsenal - three. All before the 50th minute. We were winning in two of the games. Lost between 5-7 points due to red cards.

Context is important. I'm adding context.

Expand full comment
Tom Wojtyga's avatar

No you aren’t.

The context here is Emery has had two transfer windows( January and Summer) and his net spend is about 70m( assuming he has control of transfers)

Also, Villa’s market value is half of ours ( transfermarkt).

Look, I don’t give a shit about Villa, and only respond on the subject when others bring it up, but we are five years into the project and top three favorites to win the CL( apparently ).

Apples and oranges buddy.

The whole deal is what?

You are telling me Emery is doing a great job? He is. And? They are doing better than they should be on paper even if their xG shows they've been lucky.

For me money is always the most important factor when judging by fan expectations.

City have been winning trophies non stop - endless money.

Chavs and Manure have been failing for years even though they've been spending a bunch.

Pool have been doing as good as they can - 1 PL, 1 CL, 1 FA, 2 League Cups in 9 years with what some refer as the best manager in the world.

Where do you think Arsenal should have finished in the table in the last 2 years + this season? 2x2nd is an overachievement probably. Realistically we are trying our very best. I can't ask for more.

This Villa talk is annoying. Eddie Howe was brought as an example a couple of years ago, Newcastle finished 7th last season and are currently 9th. I'm not having any of that again.

Expand full comment
kofi's avatar

outperforming xG regularly is not sustainable - we know this from arsenal two years ago as well as pool last year. good teams with better individuals will outperform their xGs to a certain degree but at the end of the day it will balance out

“For me money is always the most important factor when judging by fan expectations.”

Is it though?

Fair enough then.

Not sure why anyone would go back six years to cite a club’s transfer history( such odd number, lol)

Last five years Villa are 9th in net spend (£217m)

Arsenal are third (£470m)

So by your own metric Arsenal are outperforming their net spend in the league by one spot while Villa by five.

Wages are part of the equation.

Arsenal pay the 3rd or 4th highest combined wages in the PL.

Villa are either 6th or 7th depending on the source. They are paying about the same salaries as Spuds.

They will be ecstatic with another top 4 finish, we will be disappointed with another 2nd place finish. This is where we are.

The 3 (and later 4) #6s haven't quite gel as yet and probably contributed to the sub par progressive and forward plays. Need strong winning desire and mental strengths in the Pool game.

Jesus , as it is, needs to move on. Arsenal have evolved beyond what he'd offer. Per published game stats, he lost possession 12 times, crosses found Arsenal player 1 time, missed a half sitter etc. He kinda slowed things down, ran into blind alleys and not as great decision making at times. Sterling not much better too.

Hindsight, could be better playing Trossard on the RW and trying Nwaneri as LCM ie in Odegarrds position.

In any case, only a few more days to iron out whatever there's before the very important Pool game. Two losses in a row frankly would trigger a mini crisis, as subsequent games vs Newcastle and Chelsea aren't pieces of cakes either!

Fingers crossed injuries aren't as worrying as they appear....

Feels like one would hope the manager takes a few more risks, the safety first handbrake football with as many "6s" crammed into the starting eleven is quite hard to watch.

Enough has been said about Jesus already but agree we need to move him on next summer, adds absolutely nothing.

Feels like bar Saka and maybe Havertz, our attacking options may need to evolve to get us to the next level of winning the big trophies
