I woke up feeling more defiant than when I went to bed. I’m still proud of the boys. The only unbeaten team in the Champions League lost the final on penalties. That’s upsetting, but hard to get too upset about. PSG are an immense side, if you’re going to lose to a team, that’s the group.

Football is a little bit like gardening. Spend enough time doing it, even without a degree in horticulture, you will eventually get a feel for knowing what’s sprouting through the ground and whether it’s worth persisting with. We all knew, inherently, that making the 2006 Champions League final 20 years ago was more luck than judgment. We were looking at a garden that was dying, it had no hope of making it through the summer.
