I was reading the Guardian article about how ITV and the Beeb (BBC) are both showing tomorrow's England game and wondering who will watch channel.

I think I will go for ITV despite the ads. When we have 2 Gooners in Wrighty and Lee on duty, one can't say no to that.

According to SSN, Lokonga is set for Sevilla on loan and Tavares will be sold to Lazio.

As for ESR, Palace would also be interested in him alongside Fullham. It does look like we are going to sell him (😥). What a shame he could never come good for us. There is talent hidden underneath such a crocked player.

For now the only transfer of a player coming our way that is holding water is Calafiori from Bologna.

Let's hope that we have more to come as I am not convinced that Calafiori is going to move the needle for us so far.

Villa are doing very good business in the market

It’s not surprising since they have Monchi as director of football

They are going to be a perennial fop 4 team under Emery. They are making it clear that last season is not a fluke.

Onana lol. Both Onana's are shit. A disgrace to the name.

I'd love to hear which brilliant talent experts here were calling for both of them at different times for Arsenal. You know there's quite a few here.

“Villa overachieved last season, to manage that type of schedule with 3 ACL injuries, should have put Emery in for manager of the season.”

Agreed.

Villa’s top four fucked up my City, Arsenal , Pool, Spurs, top four prediction which would’ve paid out over $5k, so I have 5000 more reasons to hate Emery than Pedro does.

Onana for D Luiz looks like a downgrade or at best a sideways move though perfect for a top 4 contending team. He'd do well there and also play with the big boys in the UCL. If he improves further, he could join one of the big boys

Julian Alvarez, anyone??? The fear is that he's another Jesus and doesn't score enough, but he can finish, and Pep rarely plays him. He has asked to leave.

I may not take Alvarez but I would take Lautaro Martinez.

Pep will not sell another player to Arsenal which he made obvious last season when we showed interest in Cancelo.

City will take a huge loss trying to ship him out permanently this TW, when they could’ve sold him to Arsenal for twice the money last summer.

No point in sending Kiwior on loan or selling for loss. We signed him for 26m I think. Rumors that he could go for 18m and I ask myself why? He's not a bad player. He played last season and for the most part was a very sound deputy. He has a lot of attributes that we have suddenly become hung up on defenders for. He can pass, be relatively quick, he's tall and robust. If we aren't getting a bid of 40m why are we selling?

Would Kiwior make it as a second choice CB for City?

Of course not.

It matters little how sweet his left foot is when he lacks any aggression whatsoever.

People were lambasting Ozil for being timid when he was pure silk on the ball, but are perfectly fine overlooking it in a EPL defender just because he was cheap.

Just weird.

Kiwior to me looks like a Wenger era signing when 90% of the squad were nice boys you’d want marrying your daughter.

Ake is as aggressive and he's a cog in their defence. I'm open to upgrading Kiwior but definitely not on a loss or a loan deal. He's not a bad deputy at all. We have to sell on heavy profit for it to make sense

Heavy profit when everyone and their dog knows Arteta doesn’t rate him?

How do you propose that happens?

Expand full comment
Tom Wojtyga's avatar

Here’s some basic facts re Kiwior:

He’s on 60kpw, or 2.5m per year, which is almost 4x more than the player Arteta wants to replace him with is on.

A player none of us had heard of before the Euros.

Which limits the pool of clubs who could afford him.

He’s not good enough to peak interest from clubs with money, and too expensive for clubs who would love to have him.

And everyone knows Arteta cares little about club finances so they will lowball the shit out of Arsenal re Kiwior.

It really is that basic.

Mystic Leaves's avatar

Them we should keep him. He's good enough to be back up for us. He can be taught how to toughen up if that's the only problem he has, according to you. He's a good defender that shouldn't be given away

It's still very early and we knew deals would be later than last summer. No need to panic. We can play things cool to take in more and spend less.

We are in a position of strength with a magnificent, fit squad that is the envy of most clubs.

No need to be sweating at this stage. Panic and worry now is just a sign of weak minded babies.

Agreed Habesha. It looks like we are doing relatively well with our selling or at least clearing out the decks.

What will be interesting to see is if we are able to sell ESR and Partey.

Positive Pete is mentioning that Fulham are interested in ESR, so if we can also get that deal done as well, things will look even better.

Partey is the mystery one though. I am not sure who actually will want to buy him other than the Saudis.

We have started well. We have already sold Tavarez and Biereth permanently, Lokonga might be permanent too if he plays well the next year. That is a good start.

But players that have no future here need to be sold for good prices. That is how we can measure our window as a success along with incomings. Eddie and Riess are tier one to leave because they arent needed and will be easier to replace.

ESR, Ramsdale and Kiwior are next and if we get good offers then we can replace. If not I can see Kiwior leaving on loan but not the other two. Partey isnt leaving imo. And he will leave next year when his contract expires. If we sell most of these players it will be a success from a selling stand point.

I think Partey stays for his last year of contract and leaves on free next summer so he can earn big $$$ for his last pro contract.

I read somewhere that Lokonga has an obligation to buy inserted in to the deal based on appearnaces. We just need him to play a lot and play well and we will get our money. Other than that Pedro forgot the 3m we pocketed from Hutchinsons move to ipswich and also the 4m we got for Biereth. The summer has started well. We just need to sell Eddie, Nelson, Ramsdale, possibly ESR, and Kiwior (if we sign Calafiori).

There arent clear choice targets this summer like we wanted with Rice and Timber last summer so far. Calafiori aside ofcourse. I think Arteta and the recruitment team know what they want to do but I dont think they are in a rush because of the lack of movement due to the euros and players we can possibly sign all being at a similar level. There are alternatives to a lot of targets this summer.

The final loan agreement reports don't mention the obligation trigger that was being discussed last week. Seems it was not accepted by Sevilla or maybe it's just a secret detail.

I think we only sign Calafiori if we have buyer lined up for Kiwior, Kroenkes aren't going to allow Arteta to start collecting left backs like he already does with keepers.

Buying Calafiori before selling Kiwior would only further weaken our negotiating position, no matter how sought after Kiwior might be across Europe by his so many non clown variety admirers.

Although maybe I worry unnecessarily, Nigel told me Arsenal will be in the profits there and his prediction rate is a solid 100%, apparently.

"Struggle to find TV deal leaves French football clubs fearing bankruptcy - League president Vincent Labrune predicted broadcast revenues of €1bn a season but reality has proved different"

-------------

I'm surprised that Marseille have €€€ to spend, there is long article in Guardian today about how president of top French league has buggered up negotiations of media rights deal and a bunch of clubs are seriously threatened by lack of cash and will be bankrupted. The American NBA just announced massive media rights deal and French here are having to scramble for peanuts, I wonder what went wrong.

None of the players who were out on loan last season is likely to be in Arteta's plans this season.

Marquinos is out on loan with option to buy and the same appears to be the plan with Lokonga

now going out on loan to Sevilla. Tavares may also be sold to Lazio for a small fee and Okonkwo

has been released and gone back to Wrexham.

Tierney is unwanted but currently injured. It remains to be seen whether there is any offer made

for him before end of transfer window. In any event I don't see Arsenal getting a significant transfer

fee for him.

Turning to our last season's squad both Elneny and Cedric have left on expiration of their contracts.

So there are currently 23 players on books.

The most quoted departures from the squad are all home grown ie Ramsdale, Hein [to go out on

loan], Smith-Rowe, Nelson and Nketiah.

Frankly I am opposed to selling Ramsdale or Smith-Rowe unless we get a realistic fee for them.

Both are good enough for a squad challenging for EPL title. My concern is that we will sell them on

the cheap and land up replacing them with players who cost inflated prices who are not better.

If we offload three current squad players in addition to Cedric and Elneny our squad is down to

20. Do we expect to recruit 5 new players in addition to the money already spent on Raya? Frankly

that makes no sense.

Also are we going to spend money on THREE goalkeepers this summer? Clubs need that number

as a minimum in the squad. Ramsdale and Hein both leaving this summer makes absolutely no

sense.

Frankly I expect us to recruit a maximum of 4 players in this window and spend perhaps £150-170

in addition to what we have already spent on Raya. The positions to fill are a GK,DF,MF and Winger.

Calafiori [LCB/LB] is likely to cost £43 million. So we have spent with Raya £70 million. That leaves

a maximum of £130 million to spend on three remaining positions in squad.
